Santa's Stuck!!

We had fun writing and creating today.  First we watched half of the Youtube movie, When Santa Got Stuck Up the Chimney.  You can view the video below, or click on this link.  Then we wrote our own ending to the story, how we thought Santa would get out.  After we finished writing, we coloured our brick fireplace and then made Santa stuck in our chimney.

Pattern hunt

Today we went looking for patterns in the playground. The children used their iPads to photograph the patterns they found. When we came back inside they took turns using their iPads to show their group's pictures on the TV using the Apple TV. We will look at more of the playground patterns on Friday and share some of our findings with you.

Our scavenger hunt

This afternoon five children from Room 28 came to Room 26. We had a scavenger hunt to look around the room for colours, shapes, numbers and patterns. We wrote them down on the paper on our clipboards. We had fun. We got smiley faces on our hands after we finished. Written by Room 26 and Room 28

Under the Sea Mosaics

Today we created our own mosaics using items from under the sea.  Many of us brought items from home and we also used items that Mrs Nichol and Mrs Ikiua brought in.

The first step was to trace our tile onto a piece of A3 paper.  Then we moved the tile aside and created our pattern using sea shells, sticks, rocks, sea glass, pretend sea glass (marbles), and other items we had collected.

After we had our design ready Mrs Nichol spread some tile adhesive onto our tiles.  Our next job was to carefully transfer our design from the paper onto our wet tile being careful not to smudge the adhesive or get it onto our shells or fingers.  This kept our designs looking tidy and clean.  Some of us added little shells to fill in the gaps.

Our mosaics will dry over the weekend and then on Monday we will paint a gloss varnish over them.  We are excited to take them home, but Mrs Nichol might sneak them to her house to put on her own garden fence!  :D

Crackles the Clown Job Interview

The Oranges reading group have been reading with Ms Ikiua, our student teacher.  In this video three of them are interviewing Anna for the job of Crackles the Clown and Isla is recording the interview.  They came up with some very good questions to ask a potential clown.  Enjoy the video!  (view in Youtube from your computer if it isn't visible in your phone's browser)

The block maze

We read Maize Maze.  We used blocks to make a corn maze with a life guard made out of blocks. Did you know some mazes live for 100 years. I will tell you some of the materials that we used.  Blocks and coloured blocks. Our teacher said we could make a maze.  We made it out of blocks and also coloured blocks.  Anna took the photo and Isla and me pretended our pencils were stuck in the maze. by Charlotte,Anna,Isla

Reading Activities

This week the Blueberries group read 'Who is the Tallest?'  Then they lined up in height order to see who was the tallest in their group.  Next we took a picture of them on the ipad and projected it onto our (new :D) TV so they could draw their own picture of their group.  Make sure to pop in to our class to see their amazing drawings!

The Oranges group read 'Star of the Show'.  Then they chose a puppet each and wrote their own puppet shows to perform for the class. Come into the class to read their awesome puppet show scripts.

'Write About' App

We have been enjoying trying out a new app on the ipads.
It is called 'Write About'.  We get to choose a picture that we want to write about.
The pictures have a writing prompt that can help us with our writing if we choose to use it.
It's been fun getting to write and practise our typing skills on the ipads.

Simple Machines - Inclined Planes

This week we have been talking about inclined planes and we've used different objects to make our own inclined planes.  We have used blocks to build ramps that have different heights.  We've found out that if a ramp is steep the car or marble will go really fast.  If the ramp is not very steep the car or marble won't go as fast.

We made up a game to see whose marble would land closest to the center 100 point circle!  We had to change the incline of our book to try to slow our marble down.
